We sign with the MIRA-SERRA Institute in favor of life and integral conservation of Forest with Araucarias of the Atlantic Forest Biome, in the rural area of Passo Fundo municipality, Brazil (Google coordinates: -28.338081062496745, -52.31729497095527).
This forest is at deforestation risk! In times of climatic extremes, protecting this remnant is important for the environment and society, because:
a) allows the survival of wild animals, including endangered species, such as the wild cat (Leopardus wiedii), the southern wild cat (Leopardus guttulus) and the agouti (Dasyprocta azarae). Native fauna is essential to the maintenance of ecosystem services;
b) its flora, rich and exuberant, is home to the brazilian pine (Araucaria angustifolia) and the fern (Dicksonia sellowiana), which are threatened with extinction;
c) protects water springs, contributors to the Upper Jacuí River, an important water resource that supplies the local population and other communities, until reaching the capital of Rio Grande do Sul state;
d) provides other important environmental services, such as climate regulation, carbon sequestration and soil conservation;
e) serves as an ecological corridor and gene flow;
f) in the region, it is one of the last continuous forests of this size, a survivor of an intense deforestation process that began in the 19th century. The result is the dramatic situation of Passo Fundo, with only 5.5% of the original forest cover (data from Fundação SOS Mata Atlântica & Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais).
Forests like this are rare. The Atlantic Forest is among the top five planetary hotspots.
Declared as National Heritage in the Brasilian Federal Constitution (1988), it also has the protection of a specific law, the Atlantic Forest Law (2006).
Brazil signed the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), an international treaty on the protection and use of biodiversity.
Protecting this forest connects with one of The Sustainable Development Goals (United Nations Organization): “Take urgent and significant action to reduce the degradation of natural habitats, halt the loss of biodiversity and, by 2020, protect and prevent the extinction of threatened species”.
In this context, we request:
a) your attention to the conservation of this forest, which is important for life and sustainable economic development;
b) the recovery of environmental damage, possibly produced;
c) immediate measures to ensure the conservation of the area and avoid damage;
d) the adoption of effective and permanent protection measures.

O Instituto MIRA-SERRA é entidade ambientalista, sem fins lucrativos, fundada em 28 out. 2000. É Posto Avançado da Reserva da Biosfera da Mata Atlântica (MaB-UNESCO). Tem como objetivo a preservação e a conservação da biodiversidade do bioma Mata Atlântica e seus ecossistemas associados. Entre suas várias atividades, se destacam a atuação em colegiados (como o CD-FNMA, CONAMA, CONSEMA-RS, CN-RBMA, CERBMA-RS, CC ParNas Aparados da Serra Geral), coletivos ambientalistas (Conselho de coordenação da Rede de ONGs da Mata Atlântica/RMA e Coordenação tripartite da APEDEMA-RS), além do estabelecimento de Termos de Cooperação (a exemplo do Programa PMMA-PRMA da Bacia Hidrográfica do Rio Caí) e de pesquisa científica.
Instituto MIRA-SERRA foi avaliador da RPPN Maragato, em Passo Fundo, para fins de reconhecimento como Posto Avançado da Reserva da Biosfera da Mata Atlântica, em 2014. Em outra oportunidade, embora sem evolução, a entidade se disponibilizou a auxiliar na elaboração (gratuita) do Plano Municipal de Conservação da Mata Atlântica. Logo, a atuação no município não é recente, o que ensejou o estabelecimento do Núcleo Planalto Norte do Instituto MIRA-SERRA, com sede em Passo Fundo, RS, que prossegue com ações em defesa do meio ambiente.
